Play! By Sephora- Is it worth it?

I recently subscribed to the Play! By Sephora monthly box. I just received my first box (July 2016) about a week ago. I made the decision to subscribe because I get the majority of my cosmetics and skin care from Sephora. I like the idea of receiving items from one store and being able to purchase all of the items from the same store. Other subscriptions do contain items that are sold at stores like Sephora and Ulta, but a lot of them aren’t so you have to order online.

So far I’m really liking what I received in my box. Like all of the other services, the first thing you do is fill out a questionnaire. The products you receive are based off of the answers you put in your profile. I have normal to dry skin which explains why I received the products I did. Now to show you what I received in my July box…

smashboxSmashbox Photo Finish Primer– One of my favorite primers. Especially in the winter. Right now I am loving the Photo Finish Light for summer. I do not own the full size because I always get them as freebies with points. Glad I get to add another one to my stash.

first aid beautyFirst Aid Beauty Cleanser– The only product I have tried from this brand is the Ultra Repair Moisturizer. Although that product wasn’t hydrating enough, I’m excited to try this one. It’s perfect for traveling purposes. The 1oz is actually sold online and it is $5.50. There goes half your box!

hoolaBenefit Dew the Hoola– I wasn’t too excited about receiving this product. Even though I love liquid/cream products, this one seems a little orange. I have yet to try it on my face but we’ll see. The reviews online are def not the best.

ouaiOuai Haircare Wave Spray– This is the item I was really excited to try. I’ve been wanting to try these products ever since they came out. The prices have been keeping me from trying any. I’ve used this a couple times already and I like it. Enough to buy it? I’m not sure… It smells great and gives the hair just enough texture to get that beachy look. Again, great for traveling or even my gym bag.

blotterazziBlotterazi by Beautyblender– My friend has this and she loves it! It’s been pretty hot in Seattle lately (believe it or not) so my nose has been quite on the oily side. I will have to try this out. I like the fact that its reusable. It also comes with a sample of the liquid cleanser.

nestNest Citrine Eau de Parfum– I LOVE getting perfume samples, especially if it has a spray top. I used to hate receiving perfume samples. One day I decided to put them in a really cute glass container in my bathroom. It’s so easy for me to dig my hand in the jar and actually use the samples. I also love to use them when I travel! I LOVE this smell. It’s the perfect blend of citrus and flower. I wouldn’t mind owning the full size.

Now I want to talk about the pros and cons of this subscription box…

Pros

  • high end brands
  • brands you are familiar with
  • items great for traveling
  • easy access in-store/online
  • online how-to videos
  • one-on-one tutorials in-store with play pass card
  • 50 extra beauty insider points when you scan play pass card with any purchase

Cons

  • chance of receiving products you dislike
  • some samples are really small

Overall, I think Play by Sephora is the way to go. I used to be a subscriber for Ipsy and Birchbox years ago, but I got tired of receiving crappy items from brands I wasn’t familiar with. With the Play box, you at least know you will be receiving items from prestigious brands. I have created a chart below comparing other July boxes from Birchbox, Ipsy, and Boxycharm.

July 2016

Play! By Sephora $10

Birchbox $10

Ipsy $10

Boxycharm $21

Birchbox– Contains most items that are sold at Sephora. The good thing is that all of their items are sold online at birchbox.com. I also like their point system. You earn points by reviewing the products you receive. One hundred points equals $10, so thats a big plus!

Ipsy– The July bag contained only one item I’m familiar with. I would’ve been disappointed if I received this box. The Ipsy website does not sell items, but they do provide links to the designated website. They also have coupon codes for each website.

Boxycharm– This subscription box costs more, but it also has a value of at least $100 every month. The items in the July box are pretty good. I just can’t see myself spending 20 bucks a month. I’d rather use that money towards an item I really want. They also include brands I’m unfamiliar with. I honestly don’t think those brands are worth what they are retailed for. That goes for the items included in Ipsy and Birchbox as well.

I think if you are a beginner and have zero makeup, you can’t go wrong with any of these subscription services. My top choice would have to be Play! by Sephora, then Birchbox, Boxycharm, and lastly, Ipsy. There is also the Allure Beauty box ($15) and Glossybox ($20). Those may be worthy of checking out as well.

Thanks for reading. I hope this was helpful! Let me know what your favorite subscription service is!

MAC Haul

This post is wayyyy overdue. Several months ago I received a gift card to Nordstrom. I somehow used it all on MAC products. I’m not sure what came over me because I normally don’t buy MAC. I do love their lip pencils and matte lipsticks.

  1. Strobe Cream– I used to hear really good things about this product so I’m excited to try it. I love me some dewy skin! I purchased the travel size.
  2. Fix + I have never tried this product. I couldn’t help myself because the travel size is so cute. I figured I could use this to spray on my brushes.
  3. Lip Pencil in Dervish– The only nude pencil from MAC I have is Whirl. I wanted something less mauve and more pinky nude. I think this was a good pick!
  4. Lip Pencil in Nightingale– This is such a beautiful plum color. I am so excited to wear this on its own.
  5. Lip Pencil in Burgundy– I had such a hard time deciding between this or Vino. Burgundy has more of a red/brown undertone and that’s what I was looking for.
  6. Viva Glam Miley Cyrus Lipstick– I’ve purchased the Viva Glam lipsticks for a while now. I’ve been meaning to pick this one up but I just hadn’t gotten around to it. It’s a pretty pink color with an amplified finish.

One day I was snooping around on social media, I saw that a few limited edition items were in stock, so of course I made a purchase.

  1. Fix + Lavender– Everyone and their momma were going crazy over these. Of course I felt the need to want it as well. I have used this a few times and it feels amazing. I love the lavender scent.
  2. Giambattista Valli Lipsticks in Eugenie and Charlotte  This is another collection everyone went nuts for. I can’t lie… The packaging is beautiful. I wasn’t very interested in this collection, but after seeing it in person I fell in love.

Sephora VIB Sale Haul

IMG_1335

You did it again Sephora… You got me again! I think I am good for spring and summer. I am going to “try” not to make any purchases until the next VIB sale. I also purchased the Marc Jacobs eyeliner and NARS lipstick in Greta. Check out my wish list here.

  1. Kat Von D | Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette– Impulse purchase, I just couldn’t say no!
  2. Hourglass | Ambient Bronzer in Radiant Light–  I purchased this guy instead of the Dim Light Powder. It’s BEAUTIFUL!
  3. Smashbox | Photo Finish Primer Water– Loving it so far and it’s so easy to use.

    IMG_1337

Kat Von D is a genius!

  4. Supergoop! | Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil– I got a sample of this last year and I loved it. I am going on vacation to Cancun this weekend so this was a must have.
  5.  Anastasia Beverly Hills | Brow Wiz in Medium Brown– I went back to using this last month so I decided to purchase a back up.
  6. Urban Decay | Naked Skin Concealer in Medium Neutral– The consistency of this reminds me of the Mac Pro longwear. I will keep you updated on how I like it! The color range does suck.

    IMG_1338

I just can’t… I ‘m so excited to use this while I’m in Mexico!

  7. Dr. Jart+ | Dermaclear Micro Water– I’ve been doing a horrible job at washing my face after using a makeup remover wipe. This claims to remove makeup as well as tone and brighten skin.
  8. Cover FX | Custom Cover Drops in G40- I was very intrigued when I came across this online. It’s basically pigments that can be mixed with a moisturizer, primer, or a foundation. The more drops you add the more coverage you will get. I have used this once with my moisturizer and I liked it!
  9. Make Up For Ever | Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner in 8C– I have MAC’s Cherry Liner but I wanted a true red without a blue undertone and this one was the winner.
  10. NARS | Audacious Lipstick in Greta – Not pictured.
  11. Marc Jacobs | Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Black– Not pictured, repurchase.

I purchased the NAR Ita brush a while back and ended up returning it. I don’t think it was worth the money for the amount of contouring I do. I have other brushes that are just as good or even better to contour with.

I also wanted to mention I will be returning the Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks I mentioned in my previous post. Like I mentioned in my post I prefer the NARS Audacious. It takes at least three coats for the CT lipsticks to be opaque and I’m not about that life so they are going back.

Thank you for reading! I would love to know what purchases you made!

Sephora Haul

IMG_1324 2

Welcome to my monthly Sephora haul… Sephora was very kind enough to send me a 10% off coupon (to help reach my VIB Rouge for next year) so of course I had to buy something. I also had some credit from returning stuff.

At the beginning of the month I got a couple of samples of the DiorSkin Nude Air Foundation and I really fell in love with it.  I have been using these samples almost everyday and I still have half of one left. This foundation is very lightweight. I’d say its light to medium coverage, so it’s perfect for everyday. It is a serum type formula so if you have super oily skin I wouldn’t recommend. This will be my go-to summer foundation (SPF 25). I am in the shade 030 Medium Beige.

Marvelous Mauve , Dior Nude Air Foundation

I mentioned in my African Violet Shade of the Day post that I really liked the Sephora cream stains. I bought Marvelous Mauve and of course I love it!

My skin has been breaking out lately so I decided to buy a couple of the Sephora Collection masks. These are $6 for a one-time use. I’ve already used the Rose mask. At first I was a little weirded out because it’s a mask you actually put over your face. It felt very cool and relaxing. After I took the mask off, I gently massaged my face. My face felt a little sticky but it was fine because I was going to sleep anyway. When I woke up in the morning my face felt very soft and fresh. Six dollars for one is a little pricey to me, so I probably won’t repurchase one for a while.

IMG_1326

Okay, I saved the BEST for last. I am a sucker for bronzers and highlights. I picked up the Make Up For Ever Pro-Sculpting Duo in the shade number 2. Once I saw this highlight, it was over… I had to get it! There’s nothing I love more than a sun-kissed glow in the summer time. The contour part is more of a bronzer due to the orange undertone. But the highlight is gorgeous!

Can you tell I’m ready for Summer?!
